Flamingos are able to fly at a speed of approximately 55 kph. (34.15 mph.). In one night they can travel about 600 kilometres (372.60 miles).

A flamingo can eat only when its head is upside down.

Grown flamingos have few natural predators.

Flamingos live an average of 20 to 30 years.

They rest by standing on one leg. The ‘knee’ of the flamingo is actually an ankle joint and the lower leg bends forward.

Nests are built up by mouthfuls of mud!

Males and females look alike.

The Andean flamingo has yellow legs and feet.

They are about 1.2m (4ft) tall and have a wingspan of up to 1.4m (5ft) & weigh between 1.4–4kg (3–4lb). They live 20–30 years and sometimes up to 50 years long.

The reason why flamingos are pink is because they eat shrimp which have a red pigment.

Ancient Romans ate flamingo tongues and considered them a delicacy.

A group of Flamingos is called a stand.

Flamingos and pigeons feed their young a milk-like substance that is formed in their digestive tract.

Flamingos often group together by the thousands but in Africa, more than a 1,000,000 Lesser Flamingos (a species of flamingo) will group together in one place! These are the biggest flock of birds anywhere.

Flamingos have good hearing but basically no sense of smell and - like other birds - can’t taste things very well. In a flock, flamingos will fly at up to 60 kph. (37 mph.) and they’ve been witnessed traveling over 500km (300 miles) a night.
