Cousins of the penguin, Atlantic puffins are true seabirds and spend most of their time swimming, diving and feeding at sea. Puffins swallow their food underwater but they can carry up to 30 small fish at once when bringing food home to their young. Thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands of puffins nest together in large colonies. Each pair of puffins digs a burrow about 90cm (3ft) long into a soft slope near the sea. The male builds a nest in the burrow and the female lays one egg in it. During the winter, puffins live out on the ocean, not returning to land until the next breeding season.

The Atlantic Puffin is the provincial bird of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Tufted Puffin can capture and hold multiple small fish crosswise in its bill, routinely 5-20 fish at a time, for delivery to chicks at the nest. Adults eat their own food while still under water.

Nesting Tufted Puffins are highly vulnerable to red and arctic foxes, river otters, brown bears and other mammals. Such predators were once absent from most islands in the northeast Pacific but were introduced in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. Where present, mammalian predators have devastated or eliminated Tufted Puffins from many islands but programs to eradicate the introduced species have led to dramatic recovery of puffin populations.

The Horned Puffin carries small fish crosswise in its bill and delivers them to its nestlings. One individual was observed carrying 65 fish at once. Unlike other puffins, which nest in burrows, the Horned Puffin typically nests in rock crevices and cliffs. The yellow bill plate grows before the breeding season and is shed later.

Once hunted for its feathers and for food, it is now illegal in most places to hunt these birds.
