Seagulls are caring and attentive parents. Both the male and female pair for life and take turns to incubate, feed and protect the chicks.

Seagulls will eat or try to eat almost anything which in all probability explains why they can be found in most parts of the world.

Seagulls can live up to 40 years in captivity but typically only 10 in the wild.

Seagulls can learn, remember and pass on behaviours. A flock of gulls have been seen too furiously stamping their feet in unison in order to imitate rainfall and trick earthworms to rise to the surface; adults have also been seen teaching their chicks how to smash open shellfish.

Seagulls are all terrain although their large webbed feet can make them appear clumsy on land.

Seagulls have a small claw half way up their lower leg which they use to prevent being blown off narrow ledges when they sit down or roost.

Gulls are one of a few species that can drink salt water, this is because Seagulls have a special pair of glands right above their eyes, specifically designed to flush the salt from their systems through openings in the bill.

Juvenile birds form nursery flocks and will be watched over by a few adult males. Where they will play, fight and learn the skills needed for survival. They will stay with the flock until they are old enough to breed.

Seagulls naturally inhabit sheer cliff faces but have recently come to live on our roofs and among our chimney pots. This is because humans provide easy pickings and gulls are either clever or lazy depending on your point of view.

Seagulls have outstanding eyesight, better than humans and unlike most birds their eyes can move in their sockets.

Seagulls can be found around the oceans worldwide with the exception of the arctic regions, some central Pacific islands, and some areas in Southeast Asia.

Seagulls can range in size from 27-79cm (11-31ins).

Seagulls can live anywhere from 5-15 years. Some have been known to live 25 years!

Seagulls are good swimmers and can walk or even run easily on land.

Male Seagulls have red legs.

A group of Seagulls is called a colony.
