Bloodhounds were first bred in approximately 1000 AD. They originated in Belgium and France and were originally bred to help with various jobs and tasks e.g. Guarding, Tracking and Hunting as scent dogs to track large prey such as the deer and wolves.

Later Bloodhounds were bred specifically for the tracking of humans. They are known to have tracked using scents that are days old. By the way you can forget that old wives tale about running through water so they will be unable to find the secant. It will not work with bloodhound. Under the best conditions, a Bloodhound can detect as few as one or two skin cells. Breeding Bloodhounds for appearance was only introduced in the 19th Century.

This large breed of dog has a powerful chest with an amazing scenting ability and strong levels of endurance. They are known best for tracking escaped prisoners.

Due to their large skeletal structure, most of a Bloodhound’s weight is concentrated in its bones.

On average the Bloodhound is one of the shortest living of all the recognized pure bred dogs, most usually pass away when they are between six and seven years old.

The leading cause of death in Bloodhounds is Gastric Dilatation Volvuluses, commonly referred to as “bloat”. It is estimated that 85% of dogs visit a vet in a year.

They are considered suitable as a family pet.

The weight of a Bloodhound ranges from 37–47kg (80–110lbs).

The names of dog breeds are separated into different dog types which are referred to as Dog Groups. The name of the dog group for Bloodhounds is the Hound Dog breed.

After their first year of life, dogs are considered to be adults by then they are equivalent approximately 16 human years! After 2 years, they are equivalent to a 24 year old, after 3 years, they are equivalent to a 30 year old, every year after add five human years to determine the equivalent age of the dog.

The average cost of owning a medium sized dog, over a 10 year period is estimated at over $13,000!

Some famous fictional Bloodhounds are Walt Disney’s Pluto, Duke from the Beverly Hillbillies, Augie Doggy and Doggie Daddy, Ladybird from King of the Hill, Bruno from Cinderella, Huckleberry Hound, Copper in The Fox and the Hound and Trusty from Lady and the Tramp.

The bloodhound is the only animal whose evidence is admissible in an American court.

Hunting hound’s have hardly ever,
Harkened to handsome Harold’s hunting horn.
For handsome Harold’s hunting horn,
Is hung hugely with hibiscus.
