In the United States Poodles became an A.K.C. recognized breed in 1890 and became the most popular breed of dog by the 1960’s.

Poodles have been popular in France, Russia and Germany since the 1500’s – the French like the so much that they made the Poodle their national dog!

They are well known for their excellent hunting skills, especially in water retrieving, in fact the name Poodle comes from the German Pudel which is short for Pudelhund meaning “splashing dog”. Of the 5 different types of poodles, the standard is the oldest.

Poodles have hair which can range from course to soft and because of this you can give your Poodle a variety of clips or cuts. While the show cut is the most recognizable, they can also support a continental clip, a puppy clip, an English Saddle Clip or a pet clip. Their hair can also be corded like a Puli or Komondor.

Poodles are an intelligent and high energy breed of dog. They love to interact with humans as much as possible. Poodles need challenging toys and activities that keep them from being bored. They are also good protectors and field dogs. Training poodle’s is easier than most other breeds due to their quick learning skills.

Poodles can live a long time if they are healthy and live well. Different breeds have different life spans. e.g. the Toy Poodle can live up to 17 years of age, with a Miniature Poodle up to 14 years, while the Standard has approximately 11½ years.

The Poodle which is one of the oldest known breeds of dogs is not a newcomer to the halls of doggy fame. Actually carvings of a breed of dog that resembles a poodle are found on both Roman and Greek coins.

The Poodle, for all its stylish traits and trends, is actually a dog geek. In fact, the Poodle is one of the smartest dog breeds. They’re also loving, nice to strangers (as long as you keep an eye on them) and have a great sense of humour. All in all, you’d be hard–pressed to find a better game show contestant.
