The earliest known true Bear is Ursavus Elemensis and was a small, dog-sized Bear that inhabited Europe during the Miocene Epoch. This species is believed to be the ancestor of all living Bear species.

The Koala (Phascolarctos Cinereus) referred to as a “Koala Bear” is not a Bear but a marsupial. This a name was earned due to its slight resemblance to a teddy Bear. In fact, it is an arboreal marsupial that lives naturally only in Australia and some islands off the coast.

There are eight species of Bears they include the Asiatic Black Bear (Ursus Thibetanus), Polar Bear (Ursus Maritimus), Brown Bear (Ursus Arctos), American Black Bear (Ursus Americanus), Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos Ornatus), Sloth Bear (Melursus Ursinus), Sun Bear (Helarctos Malayanus) and the Giant Panda Bear (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca).

Bears in northern regions go into winter sleep and not into true hibernation. When they go into a deep sleep, there body temperature does not drop significantly. For this reason, many scientists do not classify this state as true hibernation but instead refer to it as winter sleep or winter lethargy. Still many species of Bear do hibernate for 3 to 5 months.

Bears have plantigrade paws with non-retractile claws. Bears walk with their podials and metatarsals flat on the ground. This foot configuration is referred to as plantigrade locomotion and is common to primates (including humans) as well. Other plantigrade animals include kangaroos, mice, raccoons and hedgehogs.

Bears are mammals that belong to the Family Ursidae which in turn belongs to the order Carnivora (meaning carnivores or meat eaters).
