The Chipmunk’s primary enemies are Foxes, Weasels, Bob Cats, Badgers and snakes. Birds such as Hawks, Eagles and Owls, can take many on the run over open ground. House cats, are very successful hunters in Urban areas and can be considered the Chipmunks worst enemies.

The Chipmunk is of the Ground Squirrel Family.

Though a Chipmunk’s mouth is very small but its cheeks can expand to three times its head size. Chipmunks have pouches in their cheeks That allow them to keep food in their cheeks till they can transfer it to their burrows.

The Chipmunk communications are by both sounds and gestures. Their vocabulary is not large, with about thirty distinguishable combinations. These can be loud, shrill “chip–chip–chip” sounds to softer and slower “chuck–chuck” sounds. When combined with body gestures such as tail waving, they can effectively communicate with others of their species.

They burrow a main tunnel where they rest and give birth to their young ones; other tunnels are dug for storing food.

They place leaves and grasses in their main burrow so that they can rest comfortably and give birth to their young ones.

They take an average of 75 breaths in a minute.

One Chipmunk may store up to 3.5kg (8lbs) of food in its burrows.

Chipmunks can be extremely territorial in the area around their burrow or nest but the adult only defends a territory about 15.2m (50ft) around the entrance; even though their home range may be up to 0.2 hectare (½ an acre).

Chipmunks are very active during the early morning and late afternoon.

The mating period for a Chipmunk begins from the month of February to April. These have around 4–5 young ones twice a year.

Eastern Chipmunks are larger than most of the western species. they can climb trees but they construct their nests under the ground with widespread tunnel systems that might have several entrances.

The Eastern Chipmunk has fewer grinding teeth than the other species. They mate twice a year, during early spring and again during the summer or early fall. They generally live for 1–1½ years in the forest but in captivity, they may live up to 8 years but 2–3 years is an average.

Least Chipmunks are very small in size about 18–22cm (7–8½ins). You can recognize them by the stripes on their body having 3 dark and 2 light stripes on its face.

Least Chipmunk’s habitat ranges from the high altitude tundra to sagebrush plains and they eat seeds, eggs, larvae and adults of various insects such as grasshoppers, beetles and flies. they produce a distinct ‘wop–wop’ or ‘chip–chip’ voice. When it is trying to hide from its predators, it often utters a distinct alarm note.

Yellow Pine Chipmunks have 5 distinct black longitudinal dark stripes. These stripes are evenly spaced and about equal in width. The top of the head is brown in colour and ears are black in front and white behind. Their ears and tail are shorter and the underside of the tail is greyish yellow in colour.

Although Yellow–Pine Chipmunks are omnivorous, they consume and disperse large quantities of seed, including those of antelope bitterbrush and ponderosa pine.

The Colorado Chipmunk is large in size. Their length ranges from 20–24.5cm (8–9½ins). Their central dorsal stripe is black in colour and the lateral stripes are reddish brown in colour. Their diet comprises of mountain mahogany, prickly–pear, juniper berries, currants, wild cherry, snowberry and insects.

They are very furry and camouflage their brown fur with trees and fallen logs.
