The Black Panther (Felis Concolor) is a large, powerful, carnivorous mammal of the family Felidae (a wild cat). It is similar to the Leopard usually having an unmarked tawny body. Black Panthers can be described as an unspotted Leopard with dark brown hair and very sharp emerald eyes. Their hind legs are larger than the front legs on a long body and neck with a small head, short face a long tail.

Panthers are known by several regional names such as: Cougars, Pumas, Catamounts, Mountain Lions and Leopards.

Panthers are native to Africa, Asia and America. They are widely distributed over a variety of habitats, like rainforest, woodlands, marshland, savannahs, swamps, sometimes deserts and mountains. The main reason for the panther’s adaptability to varied habitats is that it feeds on almost all type of animals. It is a typical carnivorous animal whose main source of food consists of large mammals, including Deer but also eat smaller animals including Rabbits and birds.

The name of a male is simply referred to as a Panther, the female as a She-Panther and offspring (bubs) is a cub.

The average size of a litter is one to four.

At the time of its birth, the eyes of a Black Panther are closed. In fact, they are covered with light spotted greying fur, in the new-born cubs.

When the cubs are 2–3 months old, they follow their mother to the hunting field. They are tremendously fast in learning the hunting skill.

Black Panther cubs learn the skill of climbing trees at a very young age. They grow up to be the strongest tree climbers in the cat family.

From 7–9 months after their birth, the cubs of a Black Panther can catch medium-size prey.

Almost in two years, Black Panther cubs become adept in establishing their own home range.

An adult male can reach a length of 2–2.4m (7–8ft) and weighs between 45–113.5kgs (100–250lbs).

Black Panthers are solitary animals that have a keen sense of hearing, good eyesight (day or night), sharp claws, strong jaws and extremely agile leaping up to 6m (20ft).

A Black Panther has a dark coat on its body that is functional as a mask during night, in the dense areas. This helps the panther remain safe from enemies and at the same, catch its prey without being noticed.

A Black Panther can survive in human-populated areas in a much better way than any other of the big cats.

The sound made by Black Panthers is referred to as a growl, hiss or snarl. Unlike other cats, like Bobcats, Cougars, housecats and Lynx, the Black Panther can roar. A Panther is less fertile by nature and also more unpredictable than its normal-coloured counterparts.

All the Black Panthers stay and hunt by themselves, in an area called their home range. They only come closer only during the mating season. The female Panther stays with her cubs till they are mature enough to live alone.

Black Panther is known to have large paws that have high strength. It has soft pads and fur in between its toes, which enable it to have a silent walk while chasing its prey.

A Black Panther has retractable claws and pulls its claws inside while walking and running to enable the animal to keep its claws sharp. They kill their prey by grabbing it at its throat, using its powerful paws with sharp claws. Sometimes, it kills its small preys by merely hitting its head with the front paw.
