Mosquito Trivia.

MosquitoFlying.gif

Mosquito is from the Spanish and Portuguese word for ‘little fly’.

Mosquitoes are blood sucking insects that are responsible for the transmission of many diseases throughout the human and animal populations of the world. Within Australia there are more than 300 different species of mosquito but only a small number are of major concern. Several important human diseases are transmitted throughout Australia by these insects including Dengue fever, Australian Encephalitis, Ross River Virus Disease and Barmah Forerst Virus Disease; Malaria has been transmitted locally in Australia only rarely in recent decades. In addition to being disease vectors, mosquitoes can cause major disruptions, through their persistent biting, to occupational, recreational and social activities.

Mosquitoes belong to the family of flies called Culicidae and are small fragile insects.

Worldwide there are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes.

A mosquito weighs approximately 2.5mg (0.00008818oz) and flies at a speeds of 1.6–2.4 k.p.h. (1–1.5 m.p.h.).

Beer drinkers attract more mosquitoes.

Mosquito repellents don’t repel. They hide you. The spray blocks the mosquito’s sensors so they don’t know you’re there.

Only female mosquitoes bite; using proteins from a blood meal to produce eggs. Most species can produce several batches of eggs during their lifetime and may lay 100 to 300 at a time.

The average life span of the female mosquito is 3 to 100 days; the male’s is 10 to 20 days.

Most mosquitoes remain within 1.8kms (1.1 miles) of their breeding site. A few species may range up to 32kms (20 miles).

Presently, the cues used by mosquitoes to find their hosts are poorly understood. Carbon dioxide (CO2), heat, octenol and light have been shown to be attractants. Other compounds tested such as lactic acid also have proved to attract certain species of biting insects.

It would take 1,200,000 mosquitoes, each sucking at once, to completely drain the average human of blood.
